Reading & Phonics


Students take part in an extended reading block every day. Reading instruction includes Reading Workshop, a balanced literacy approach that includes read alouds, shared reading, guided reading and independent reading. During Reading Workshop, students have multiple opportunities to receive targeted instruction one-on-one and in small groups. Additionally, students receive instruction in, a research-based approach to phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling and handwriting. Students engage in independent, leveled reading as part of the reading block and will be expected to continue this reading at home each day.


  • Curriculum: Teacher-created guided reading (w/ support from the Teachers College Reading Project:  Units of Study & Scholastic).
  • Purpose: Explicit literacy instruction. Opportunity to practice with teacher, with peers and independently (comprehension, phonics, word study, etc.). Reflect on literacy development. 
  • Components: Mini-lesson, centers (guided reading, phonics, word study, listening center, etc.), independent reading, share.
  • Time Allocation: 60 minutes per day M-Th, 30 – 45 minutes on Friday (depending on grade level).
  • Classroom Set-Up: Whole class mini-lesson at rug, small group centers around room (4 – 6 kids/center), guided reading at table, classroom library (leveled and genre/content-based), designated place for visuals and materials.



  • Curriculum: Wilson Fundations 
  • Purpose: Explicit phonics instruction and opportunity for guided practice and independent application.
  • Time Allocation: 20 minutes per day (plus more time during reading centers).
  • Classroom Set-Up: Small differentiated groups and space for teachers to work at tables.
